Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) took center stage at the recent Kongres Ekonomi Bumiputera (KEB) 2024 in Kuala Lumpur. The three-day congress brought together policymakers, industry captains, and education experts to discuss the pivotal role of TVET in upskilling the Bumiputera workforce and driving economic growth. As the nation rallies behind this cause, engineering firm Gruppe Dynamic has pledged its support by offering technical internships to TVET students.

The congress highlighted the increasing demand for skilled technical workers across sectors like manufacturing, construction, and services. With rapid technological disruptions, there is an urgent need to equip the Bumiputera community with relevant skills to remain competitive in the evolving job landscape.

“TVET is the way forward to prepare our youth for the future of work,” emphasized YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister of Economic Affairs, in his keynote address. “We must revamp our TVET curricula to align with industry needs and incorporate cutting-edge technologies such as AI, IoT, and robotics.”

Panel discussions explored strategies to boost TVET enrolment and improve the perception of vocational training among Bumiputeras. Proposed initiatives included enhancing career guidance in schools, offering industry-recognized certifications, and providing incentives for TVET graduates.

Industry giants like Petronas, DRB-HICOM, and Malaysia Airlines stressed the importance of close collaboration between TVET institutions and companies. “We need a stronger feedback loop to ensure the skills taught match our talent requirements,” said Encik Ahmad Nizam, Head of Talent Development at Petronas.

Recognizing the need for practical exposure, Gruppe Dynamic, an expert in structural design, has pledged to offer internship opportunities to TVET students. “We believe in nurturing the next generation of technical talents through hands-on experience,” said Datuk Ir Ts Wan Nazri Bin Wan Aria, MD of Gruppe Dynamic. “Our internship program will provide students with real-world projects, mentorship from experienced engineers, and a glimpse into the professional engineering environment.”

The congress delved into successful TVET models from other countries, such as Germany’s renowned dual vocational training system. Participants explored avenues for public-private partnerships and international collaborations to elevate TVET standards in Malaysia.

As the congress concluded, all stakeholders affirmed their commitment to prioritizing TVET as a key enabler for Bumiputera economic empowerment. The outcomes and recommendations will shape policies and action plans to create a future-ready, highly-skilled Bumiputera workforce, supported by industry initiatives like Gruppe Dynamic’s internship program.
